In the late ’80s, London-based Steve Bicknell was resident DJ at the Energy raves, participating in many of the defining events in UK club culture’s history. Steve and Sheree Rashit run the now legendary LOST events which influenced a whole generation of British electronic musicians, Steve has DJ-ed at events throughout Europe, Japan, Australia and America, including The Rex, Liquid Rooms, Sonar Festival, Tribal Gathering, Tresor, Bugged Out, Berghain, Eleven and Fabric
As a producer, Steve has recorded under his own name and several aliases (The Evader, Kim Bilir, S.B. Project), initially releasing on Perfecto and NovaMute before Steve and Sheree Rashit set up Cosmic records, to release both his own material and that of Jay Denham, Robert Hood, Juan Atkins, DJ Rush, Tyree Cooper, Mark Broom and more. He has remixed tracks for Joey Beltram, Luke Slater, Plastikman, Dj Rush, Hauschka, The Advent and The Drum Club to name a few. In 2015 Steve has released 2 tracks, spread over 2 V/A. EP’s on Ostgut Ton as part of Function’s offical Berghain 07 mix. New Cosmic material as well as a series of remixes are also due to be released this summer.
Forward-thinking and rigorously uncompromising, Steve has remained connected to the roots, putting quality before quantity, innovation before imitation, and sticking firm to ideals and principles – an unswerving, singular vision guided by a deep and enduring devotion to the music that inspires him and a desire to present it in the purest way possible.
Music is all about connections, and is at it´s most vital when it speaks to you in a voice only you seem to hear. For Refracted, electronic music, and techno in particular, is the chosen medium to find his unique voice, to connect.
And a growing number of people, wanting more from techno than formulaic entertainment and a soundtrack to dance to, are connecting with his particular vision and peculiar sound. This might be because Refracted´s music feels as fundamentally human as it sounds otherworldly. It is techno more as an idea and conduit, than as an easily-labeled sound. It is dance music where layered rhythms act almost on a neural, sub epidermal level, while moving and evolving soundscapes acquire a tactile, understated physicality. Paramount examples of this can be found on releases on Refracted's own Mind Express label, and on celebrated labels like Canadian ambient/deep-techno imprint Silent Season and Pole Group, his path unravelling further, a mind set on favoring unflinching quality over quantity.
The dynamics created by this yearning to displace us from space and self, while rooted in a elemental, naturalistic approach, which catalyzes inner self discovery, are also at the foundation of his DJing. Spiritual, almost meditative, his sets possess a kinetic energy as well, which is a clear indication of a DJ who knows the fundamental role of dancing as part of the ritual. He wants to take us somewhere, the “where” being of our own choosing, the trail never being the most travelled.
Valerio Gomez de Ayala
Valerio Gomez de Ayala was born in Naples (Italy) in 1984, and he’s now based in Rome since 2011. He's one half of the dj/producer duo natural/electronic.system.
At the end of the '90s, he started collecting techno, IDM, ambient, experimental, house and electronic music records from all over the world. He was later influenced by the florid Neapolitan house/techno scene and inspired by the foreign djs coming to perform in Naples clubs.
He met his friend Antonio in high school. Together they founded the natural/electronic.system. project in order to express their personal definition of sound, mixing together different genres of electronic music during dj sets aimed at having organic textures of sound.
Over the years they became keen on the old and modern sound coming from another Italian city, Rome, where they started connections with local musicians. At the same time, n/e.s. started performing dj sets in different Italian cities, while running some nights in Naples and private parties in the forests on the slope of the volcano Vesuvius. In 2009, natural/electronic.system. took part to the mighty Labyrinth festival in Japan.
Since then, they started exporting their distinctive sound in different clubs and festivals. Since 2012 Valerio is resident DJ at the STRATI night in Rome.
